ChatGPT Business and Claude Team now have the same headline seat prices in the U.S.: Standard seats are $20 per user per month on annual billing or $25 monthly, while Premium seats are $100 annually or $125 monthly. Both plans require at least two seats, both let one workspace mix Standard and Premium users, and both keep business content out of model training by default.
That price parity makes the old ‘which one is cheaper?’ comparison much less useful. The real decision is what your team gets inside the workspace: how usage resets, what happens after included capacity runs out, how company knowledge is searched, which coding and agentic work surfaces are included, how administrators control access, and whether the plan still fits as your headcount grows.
Methodology note: this is a documentation-based plan comparison using current OpenAI and Anthropic pricing pages and help-center documentation. AI-XBlog is not presenting this article as a model-quality benchmark or a hands-on test of both workspaces. Product behavior, limits and regional pricing can change, so verify the linked official sources before procurement.
Quick answer: the prices match, but the products do not
| Decision | ChatGPT Business | Claude Team |
|---|---|---|
| Standard seat | $20/month annual or $25 monthly | $20/month annual or $25 monthly |
| Premium seat | $100/month annual or $125 monthly | $100/month annual or $125 monthly |
| Minimum | 2 paid seats | 2 members |
| Self-serve team ceiling | Up to 200 paid seats for current workspaces | Up to 150 seats |
| Included work surfaces | ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, Codex, apps, company knowledge, workspace agents | Claude, Claude Code, Cowork, enterprise search, connectors, Design and Science |
| After included usage | Eligible usage can draw from workspace credits under flexible pricing | Usage credits can continue Claude, Cowork and Claude Code at standard API rates |
| Business data used for model training by default? | No | No |
Use ChatGPT Business as the stronger starting shortlist when your organization wants one managed OpenAI workspace spanning ChatGPT, Codex, company knowledge and shareable workspace agents. Use Claude Team as the stronger starting shortlist when your day-to-day work centers on Claude Code, Cowork, enterprise search and Anthropic’s connected knowledge-work stack. That is a workflow recommendation, not a claim that one company has the universally better model.
Pricing: there is effectively no list-price winner
At current U.S. list pricing, the seat math is identical for the two self-serve team plans.
| Team configuration | Annual-billing monthly equivalent | 12-month seat cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Standard seats | $40 | $480 |
| 10 Standard seats | $200 | $2,400 |
| 8 Standard + 2 Premium | $360 | $4,320 |
| 10 Premium seats | $1,000 | $12,000 |
The same configurations cost the same on ChatGPT Business and Claude Team before tax, regional pricing differences and any usage credits. That means procurement should not choose between them based on the seat invoice alone.
Mixed seats matter more than the headline Premium price. If two people are power users and eight are not, both vendors let you put the expensive capacity only where it is needed rather than upgrading all ten employees.
Usage limits: this is where ‘same price’ starts to diverge
ChatGPT Business
OpenAI says Premium Business seats include five times more usage than Standard seats and remove the five-hour usage limit. Standard and Premium seats both include ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, while eligible usage beyond included limits can be extended through workspace credits under flexible pricing.
OpenAI does not reduce the entire Standard allowance to one permanent ‘messages per month’ number on the Business pricing page. Consumption depends on the model and capability, so a purchasing decision should use the current rate card and workspace usage data rather than assuming every feature consumes capacity the same way.
Claude Team
Anthropic documents Team usage more explicitly in relative terms. Standard seats currently provide 1.25× Pro usage per five-hour session, while Premium provides 6.25× Pro—equivalent to five times the Standard seat. Both seat types also have per-member weekly usage limits.
When an organization enables usage credits, members can continue using Claude, Claude Code and Cowork after reaching included seat limits. Anthropic says those credits are then consumed at standard API rates, with organization-wide and per-user spend limits available to owners.
There is one more reason not to interpret ‘Team includes all models’ too casually: Anthropic’s current documentation says some Fable-model usage on Standard Team seats runs through usage credits, while Premium seats include a portion of Fable usage inside their weekly allowance. This is a good example of why current model-specific rules need to be checked before budgeting heavy usage.
Company knowledge: Company Knowledge vs enterprise search
Both products now go well beyond uploading files into a chat. They are trying to become an interface over internal company information, but they package that idea differently.
ChatGPT Business: Company Knowledge and apps
OpenAI lists Company Knowledge and apps that connect to internal tools as Business features. The current Business plan supports connections to services including Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365. The broader ChatGPT workspace can then use those connected sources across research, chat and agentic workflows, subject to workspace permissions.
Claude Team: enterprise search and connectors
Anthropic describes an enterprise search capability inside Team: a dedicated search project provisioned for organization members, with search across Slack, Microsoft 365 and custom connectors. Claude Team also supports workplace connectors including Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Microsoft 365 and Slack.
On paper, both can ground work in company systems. The useful comparison is therefore not ‘does it have connectors?’ but which connected sources your company actually uses, which actions are allowed, and which retrieval experience fits your workflows. This article does not claim one retrieves company knowledge more accurately because we have not benchmarked the two systems against the same private corpus.
Coding: Codex vs Claude Code
For engineering-heavy teams, coding is no longer an add-on decision. It is included in both team subscriptions.
| Area | ChatGPT Business | Claude Team |
|---|---|---|
| Primary coding product | Codex | Claude Code |
| Included in Standard team seat | Yes | Yes |
| Heavy-user seat | Premium raises included capacity | Premium raises included capacity |
| Non-interactive agent SDK allowance | Use OpenAI’s workspace/API pricing model as applicable | Anthropic currently provides a separate monthly Agent SDK credit: $20 for Team Standard and $100 for Team Premium |
Anthropic explicitly says the Agent SDK credit is for individual experimentation and automation; shared production automation should use the Claude Platform API for predictable pay-as-you-go billing. That distinction matters if a team is trying to stretch a seat subscription into production infrastructure.
We are deliberately not declaring a coding winner here. A serious Codex-vs-Claude-Code judgment needs the same repositories, tasks, review criteria and failure analysis. This plan comparison only establishes what each subscription includes and how the capacity is billed.
Agentic work: Workspace Agents vs Claude Cowork
This is one of the biggest strategic differences between the products, even though both are moving toward delegated work.
OpenAI Workspace Agents
OpenAI’s Workspace Agents are currently a research preview for Business and other organization plans. An agent can be built once, connected to approved tools and company context, shared across the workspace, run on a schedule, used in Slack, or triggered through an API. OpenAI also describes admin permissions, monitoring and approval gates for sensitive actions.
That makes Workspace Agents especially relevant when the purchasing goal is standardizing a repeatable workflow across multiple employees, not just giving each employee a more capable individual assistant.
Claude Cowork
Claude Cowork uses the same agentic architecture as Claude Code for non-coding knowledge work. Users can hand off multi-step tasks, work across files and tools, run cloud sessions, use scheduled tasks, and return to completed deliverables. Team owners can control whether Cowork, cloud execution and browser capabilities are available to the organization.
Cowork is therefore closer to a general delegated-work surface for individual team members, while Workspace Agents emphasize reusable workspace-level agents that can be shared and triggered. The products overlap, but they are not exact feature-for-feature equivalents.
Admin, identity and governance
| Control | ChatGPT Business | Claude Team |
|---|---|---|
| SSO | Yes (SAML SSO) | Yes |
| Domain onboarding | Domain verification and workspace discovery | Verify before purchase: Anthropic’s Team Help Center lists Domain Capture + JIT, while its current pricing comparison marks Domain Capture as unavailable on Team |
| Central billing | Yes | Yes |
| Usage / adoption analytics | Yes | Yes |
| Spend controls | Workspace credit and spend controls | Organization and per-user usage-credit limits |
| Built-in roles | Owner, Admin, Analytics Viewer, Member | Primary Owner, Owner, Admin and User; custom roles are Enterprise-only |
| SCIM | Enterprise, not Business | Enterprise, not Team |
| Custom data retention controls | Enterprise-level feature | Enterprise-level feature |
Anthropic documentation conflict: the current Team Help Center says Team includes Domain Capture, JIT and role-based permissioning, while the current Claude pricing comparison marks Domain Capture and Role-based access as unavailable on Team. The separate Roles and Permissions documentation confirms built-in Team roles but reserves custom roles for Enterprise. Because these official pages are not fully aligned, verify the exact identity features shown in your Team purchase flow before relying on Domain Capture for deployment.
This is an important procurement boundary. Both self-serve team products now have meaningful identity and admin controls, but organizations that require automated lifecycle provisioning, deeper audit/compliance controls, custom retention, network restrictions or more granular enterprise governance should compare Enterprise plans instead of trying to force Business or Team to satisfy an enterprise requirement.
Privacy: both use a business-data default, not the consumer default
OpenAI states that ChatGPT Business data is not used to train its models by default and that business data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Anthropic similarly says its commercial products, including Claude for Work Team and Enterprise, are outside the consumer training-data policy and that Team content is not used for model training by default.
For a company deciding between reimbursing personal subscriptions and buying a managed team workspace, this is a more important distinction than many feature checklists. The organization plan changes not only billing and administration but also the default contractual and data-handling context.
Team size: ChatGPT Business currently has the higher self-serve ceiling
For new and current self-serve workspaces, OpenAI documents a maximum of 200 paid Business seats, while Anthropic documents Claude Team for 2 to 150 seats. Teams beyond those limits should evaluate the respective Enterprise plans.
This difference is irrelevant for a five-person startup but very relevant to a company approaching 150 employees that wants to avoid an Enterprise migration in the near term.
Decision matrix: which plan fits which team?
| Your priority | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One workspace spanning general knowledge work, Codex and company-wide reusable agents | ChatGPT Business | ChatGPT Work, Codex, Company Knowledge and Workspace Agents live inside the Business workspace |
| Claude Code plus delegated non-coding work in Cowork | Claude Team | Claude Code and Cowork are core Team surfaces, with shared usage-credit controls |
| Organization search is a primary workflow | Claude Team deserves a close look | Team explicitly includes enterprise search across connected organization sources |
| Deploying repeatable shared agents on schedules, in Slack or by API trigger | ChatGPT Business deserves a close look | Workspace Agents are designed around reusable workspace deployments and triggers |
| 151–200 self-serve seats | ChatGPT Business | Current Business ceiling is 200; Claude Team tops out at 150 |
| SCIM, custom retention, advanced audit/compliance or network controls are mandatory | Neither self-serve plan | Compare the Enterprise tiers instead |
| You only care about the cheapest Standard or Premium seat | Neither has a list-price advantage | Current U.S. seat prices match |
A better way to run a two-week pilot
If your organization genuinely could use either product, do not evaluate them with random prompts. Use the same real work sample and measure outcomes that matter to the team.
- Pick three recurring workflows. For example: internal research, a coding task and a document or operations task.
- Use the same source material. Do not give one product a connected knowledge base and the other only pasted text.
- Track intervention. Count how often a person must correct, re-prompt or recover a failed action.
- Track capacity. Note whether real users hit included limits during normal work.
- Track governance friction. Test onboarding, permissions, connector controls and the review process—not only answer quality.
- Price the actual seat mix. Do not assume everyone needs Premium.
This produces a company-specific answer without pretending a generic benchmark can decide how your private data, tooling and workflows will behave.

FAQ
Is ChatGPT Business cheaper than Claude Team?
Not at current U.S. list prices. Both currently charge $20 per Standard seat per month on annual billing or $25 monthly, and $100 per Premium seat on annual billing or $125 monthly. Taxes, currency conversion, regional pricing and usage credits can still change the real invoice.
Do both plans require five users?
No. Current documentation from both vendors uses a two-seat or two-member minimum. Older Claude Team references that mention five seats are outdated for the current plan.
Do both plans include coding tools?
Yes. ChatGPT Business includes Codex, while Claude Team includes Claude Code. The subscription economics and surrounding workflow products differ, so inclusion alone does not tell you which coding environment fits your team better.
Do both vendors train on Team or Business data?
Both vendors state that managed business or commercial workspace content is not used for model training by default. Organizations with specific legal, retention or regulatory requirements should still review the current commercial terms and security documentation rather than relying only on a pricing-page summary.
When should a company skip these plans and go Enterprise?
When procurement requirements—not just user count—demand capabilities such as SCIM, deeper audit and compliance tooling, custom retention, network-level controls or other enterprise governance. Also move to Enterprise when your team exceeds the self-serve seat ceiling.
Bottom line
ChatGPT Business vs Claude Team is no longer a meaningful price war. At current list prices, the seat tiers match almost exactly. The better purchasing decision comes from the work your company wants the platform to own.
ChatGPT Business packages ChatGPT, Work, Codex, Company Knowledge and reusable Workspace Agents into a managed OpenAI workspace. Claude Team packages Claude, Claude Code, Cowork, enterprise search and Anthropic’s connected knowledge-work tools into its managed workspace. Both offer mixed seat types, SSO, centralized administration, business-data defaults and paid capacity beyond included limits.
That means the right pilot is not ‘ask both the same trivia question.’ Test your real repositories, internal knowledge sources, delegated tasks, admin controls and actual seat mix. The result will tell you far more than the identical $20 headline price.
